Earth Hour, a sixty minute statement against climate change and global warming, started in 2007 as a cooperation between WWF Australia and the city of Sydney. The lights went off at 7:30 p.m. on the last Saturday in March in order to symbolically save energy. The idea spread fast and the following year over 400 cities in 35 countries joined in, with such prominent landmarks as the Empire State Building (New York), the Sears Tower (Chicago), the Golden Gate Bridge (San Francisco), the Sydney Opera House, the Colosseum (Rome), the Royal Castle (Stockholm), London's City Hall, the Space Needle (Seattle) and the CN Tower (Toronto, Canada) turning off all non-essential lighting for one hour. It is estimated that some 50 million people all over the world observed Earth Hour 2008.
This year even more people are to join in, and that's where you come in: Tell your friends and family about it, your neighbors as well as your classmates, colleagues, co-students, whoever. Ask them to turn off all unnecessary lights for one hour on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. local time. You are not alone! Already 83 countries have committed to Earth Hour as well as roughly 2400 cities and communities and almost 19,000 businesses all over the globe. Make it happen, switch off the lights!
