Yonic is swiss based NGO working in Bahia Brazil for the past 5 years. Working with ecology, waste managment, mangronve preservation (for more details about our past and present projects, please check out our website www.yonic.org) we are now preparing a new project for the tropical summer 2010.

With the objective of preservation in one of the world's seven hotspot, Yonic has bought a few hectares of land with mangrove on a peninsula where the coastline ecosystem (restinga) is still preserved. On the beach, turtle nest every year and for the past five Yonic has monitored and improved the assistance local volunteers offer to help in this endeavour. Our land is surrounded by mangrove and is at the mouth of a river (Piracanga river) where the water offers the perfect conditions for most local fauna to reproduce. Sharks and dolphins all find peace in the muddy mangove waters to breed.

The idea of the Piracanga Reservation is to preserve this ecosystem by making it known to people and by making it accessible for visitation in a very simple, collective and ecological way. This occupation of the land will be of positive impact because besides taking care of water, sewage system and waste, all of our activities will be in the direction of the ecosystem preservation, such as: - mangrove reforestation - turtle breeding - cleaning up the beach from all plastic debris and its transformation, as much as canoing up the river, surfing in the ocean, fishing, bird watching and wandering through the atlantic forest or along the beach. Being present there with such activities will contribute directly the the ecosystem preservation as apropriate habits and life style will be introduced naturally influencing the local community.

Furthermore, observing this region through time will contribute to identify the endemic spieces and draw attention on the importance of the preservation of this region. In order to lanch the project at the end of the year, (december 2009) Yonic has a budget of 35.000 Euros (aprox 55.000 CHF). If you wish to contribute, be aware that any amount helps and there is never too small of a donation! If you wish to get more details, please contact me I will be very happy to show you that the money asked is directed to the execution of the project.
